How this car insurance estimate is calculated
This calculator starts with an illustrative $2,300 annual base rate and multiplies it by eight factors: age, driving record, credit tier, state, vehicle type, mileage, coverage, and years continuously insured. The same numbers appear in the form, your breakdown, and the tables below.
What moves the number? In this model, the youngest age bracket multiplies the base by 2.00, while a major violation multiplies it by 2.10. Each factor compounds with the others. These are simplified model assumptions, not current insurer rates or a prediction of your exact bill.
Compare scenarios: Change mileage, vehicle type, coverage, or insurance history to see the impact. The model applies all eight factors uniformly and does not account for every state-specific rating restriction, insurer rule, or discount.
Annual estimate = $2,300 × Age × Driving Record × Credit × State × Vehicle × Mileage × Coverage × Years Insured.
Example: baseline answers with Ohio (×0.80) give $1,840/year, or $153.33/month. Monthly cost is the unrounded annual estimate divided by 12.
Transparent multiplier tables
These are the exact numbers used in your estimate. A multiplier of 1.00 leaves the base unchanged; values above or below 1.00 raise or lower it.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to give my email to see results?
No — ever. Your estimate appears instantly on this page when you click Calculate My Rate. Your calculator answers stay in your browser and are not submitted or saved by this tool.
How accurate is this estimator?
It is a simplified educational model, not a validated quote or guaranteed price range. Real prices depend on the insurer, ZIP code, exact vehicle, discounts, driving history, and applicable rating rules.
Why did my rate come out high?
Several above-baseline multipliers can compound into a high estimate. The “Why this number?” panel shows which of your selections raised or lowered the model result, and the breakdown lists all eight multipliers.
How can I compare a lower-cost scenario?
Change one answer at a time, such as mileage or coverage level, and compare the recalculated result. A lower modeled price does not mean a policy offers suitable protection. A licensed insurer can explain actual coverage, deductibles, discounts, and prices.
